Courmayeur Mont Blanc

Courmayeur Mont Blanc

“A sweet, expressive, mighty, capricious, savage, fascinating natural environment which seems to say: stay here!” This is how, back in 1864, the doctor and great Mountaineer Auguste Argentier described Courmayeur, using words which give a comprehensive idea of this which is a real “jewel” in the Alps. Courmayeur means enjoying Mountain climbs and good life: Mountain boots and 6 inch high heel court shoes; rocks, ice and lukewarm thermal waters; explorer style abstemious meals and fine gourmet food. These are the different facets of a unique tourist venue, where tough Mountain life can combine with the glamour and luxury of international tourism. Its geographic location makes it a perfect synthesis of different cultures. It stands between Italy, France and Switzerland and yet it represents the essence of the Italian Alps. Courmayeur is the second largest municipality in the Aosta Valley and it belongs to the Valdigne Mont Blanc Mountain Community, located at the convergence of Val Vény and Val Ferret, whose northern flanks belong to the Mont Blanc chain which all together extends over a length of 30 kilometres and a width of 14 km. The high Mountains determine the typical morphology of the floor of the 100 km long Aosta Valley which ranges from the snow-covered granite massif, down to the Canavese plain. Twelve side valleys descend towards the main valley. Two are the valleys in the municipality of Courmayeur where the two Dora streams called Dora di Vény and Dora di Ferret originate; their icy, turbulent waters converge below Entrèves, giving origin to the Dora Baltea river. Courmayeur, fashionable and sophisticated, is one of the poshest localities in the Alps, and yet it is not a place merely for “the elect”. It boasts an extremely diversified hotel offering, ranging from the luxury four and five star hotels, to three star hotels and to the cosy, friendly “meublé”. Furthermore lately, accommodation has extended to small hotels full of Mountain charm with a good price-quality ratio, some are located in the outskirts of the town or in the little hamlets. The word which best describes the “posh soul” of Courmayeur is “boutique”. It is a traditional, very hospitable place capable of giving a warm reception, albeit knowledgeable of the secrets of a refined lifestyle. The attention to detail and the typically Italian awareness of style make Courmayeur a very special corner in the Alps. Visitors can have a unique experience shopping in the central street of the village, the famous Via Roma, eating at the many gourmet restaurants on the pistes, visiting the hamlets and villages surrounding Courmayeur, imbued with history, and appreciating the silence in Val Ferret, the cross-country skiing paradise. www.courmayeurmontblanc.it
